Dear White Moon Friends and Clients,
We wanted to let everyone know that the clinic will be closed Friday, September 23 to Wednesday, September 28. We will be going to visit Conan‘s family in Michigan.
White Moon Healing Center will be celebrating its 24th anniversary on October 1. We are so happy to have met so many wonderful people over the years, many of which have become our close friends and surrogate family. Thank you all for your continued support.
Our Detox Class is coming up on Sunday, October 23. We have changed the location from Hyde Park to Noble Square (just southeast of Wicker Park). I teach this class with another acupuncturist who has her practice in the Hyde Park bank building. We have been holding the class in the conference room there. This year we will be using the classroom space at the Occult Bookstore. This space will allow us to have more students, and should be a much more convenient location for people on the north side. We update the information every year, so the class gets better and better.
This class covers information on how to replace common over the counter and prescription medications with natural remedies, and how to detox all the systems of the body, which is the most important way to treat chronic disease. We will also cover the latest information on medicinal cannabis and the endocannabinoid system—our body’s master regulatory system. This information is absolutely fascinating since this system was only discovered in the past 15 years. Tremendous amounts of research are being done all over the world on the healing power of cannabinoids. Information about the class and where to register are found below. We hope to see you there.
The fall equinox is coming up next week on Thursday, Sept. 22 at 9:21 am. We hope everyone has a great autumn season,
Mary Helen and Conan
Dear Friends and Clients,
Happy Spring Equinox! It occurs this year on Saturday March 19 at 11:30 pm.
We want to let everyone know that the clinic will be closed from Sunday, April 3 through Tuesday, April 12. We will be going to Nashville to visit Mary Helen’s aunt who recently turned 90.
Our annual Detox Class will be coming up on Sunday, May 1. This class goes over detoxing all the organs of the body, replacing common chemical medications with natural remedies, and the latest information on medicinal cannabis, and the endocannabinoid system. It’s a great class for anyone trying to recover from chronic illness, or who wants to reduce or eliminate their over-the-counter or prescription medications.
We attended several continuing education workshops recently. In November, we were able to see Australian medical herbalist, Lee Carroll. He taught a class on neuroendocrine health. This focused on understanding and supporting the chemistry of the stress response in the body. He discussed whole food nutrition and herbs that helped balance the nervous, endocrine, immune, and digestive systems. We learned how to balance the pituitary, hypothalamus, hippocampus, adrenals, thyroid, and pancreas, as well as the microbiome in the GI tract. Carroll talked a lot about the gut-brain axis which integrates the GI tract, and the central nervous system. We learned how stress induced dysbiosis (imbalance of gut flora) can lead to inflammation, infection, and even anxiety. He also discussed endocrine disrupting toxic chemicals, and how they can lead to autoimmune problems. We learned more details about the endocannabinoid system, heavy metal detoxification, blood sugar balance, and how to treat both hyper- and hypo-thyroid disease.
In December, we studied with acupuncturist Michael Gaeta. His class was called “Cardiovascular Health—Cholesterol Myths, Creating Heart Health Naturally.” He spoke about using whole foods, herbs, and food/plant-based vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids to heal many cardiovascular issues. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S. and the world. It results from inflammation and insulin resistance, just like diabetes and obesity. Gaeta talked about the harm and toxicity of statin drugs (Lipitor, Crestor, etc.) that are used to lower cholesterol, and the low correlation between high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease. He discussed using lab work, such as blood, urine, saliva, and hair mineral analysis to diagnose imbalances in the cardiovascular system. We covered issues such as hypertension, hypotension, coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, angina, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, and vascular weakness, which can cause aneurisms, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids.
After the class, Conan interviewed Gaeta for an article he published on vitamins.
Other articles he has written recently that you might enjoy include:
He has also done a number of articles on individual herbs such as dill, thyme, hibiscus, buckwheat, savory, rosemary, hawthorn, and others. You can find these and other articles here.
We would love you to refer your friends, family, and coworkers. As always we are happy to provide a free 10 to 15 minute phone consultation for new and existing clients. We want to be your holistic primary care providers. Always contact us when any health issues arise, and we can direct you toward natural treatment options, and hopefully prevent the need for chemical medications, or unnecessary medical procedures.
Hope you have a wonderful Spring.
Mary Helen and Conan
Dear White Moon Clients and Friends,
We just wanted to let everyone know we will be open on Friday and Saturday this July 4th weekend.
We’ve made some changes to our website recently. We now have a new page with Conan’s articles on herbs and natural health.
As a health journalist for the Epoch Times, Conan researches various health topics and interviews experts in the field to get the latest information. He usually posts one to two articles a week. He already posts some of them to our Facebook page. For your convenience we will now include them on our website.
Recent topics include:
We’ve also added a selection of juice bars found throughout the city. Scroll down to the end of our Restaurant Recommendations list to see them. Let us know if you have any favorites that aren’t on our list.
Fresh vegetable juices are a great source of vitamins and antioxidants, and they also help with detoxification. It’s great if you can make your own fresh juices with organic produce, but it’s good to know that there are several places around town that can make one for you if you’re short on time or energy. Most people don’t have a special juicer at home for wheatgrass so it’s great to get a shot of that when you’re out.
The new Edgewater Whole Foods has a juice bar, we each get a shot of wheatgrass plus a shot of turmeric every time we shop there. We recommend getting all the greens available plus a little beet or carrot to sweeten. Avoid any fruit in your juice except for lemon.
As always we offer free phone consults for all your health care needs. If your family or friends have questions, please direct them to our website, or have them give us a call. We will be open all summer except for a week in September to visit Conan’s family- date to be announced.
Something else to consider is your flex spending account—a special, tax-free account used to pay for out-of-pocket health care costs. While acupuncture and herbs aren’t covered by most Illinois insurance plans, we have had many clients use their flex account to pay for our services.
Have a great summer! Be sure to catch a glimpse of the moon tonight. It’s full at 9:19 pm. The July full moon was known to the Native Americans as the Full Buck Moon because that’s when the male deer begins to sprout new antlers.
Mary Helen and Conan
Dear Clients and Friends,
Happy Spring! Today is the spring equinox, the new moon, a total solar eclipse, and the start of the new astrological year. It’s a time for new beginnings, as well as cleansing and detoxing the body.
Our annual Detox Class is coming up Sunday, April 26. A lot of new information has been added this year. If you, or anyone you know, has chronic health issues they want to take care of naturally, or if you’re just seeking optimal health, consider taking this class. This one day class covers detoxifying all the body’s organ systems, replacing common over-the-counter and prescription medications with natural remedies, and the latest research on the endogenous cannabinoid system, hemp, CBD oil, and medicinal cannabis. Info for the class and registration are at the bottom of this email.
Please note: the clinic will be closed Saturday, March 28 for Mary Helen to take a continuing education class. The seminar is Treating Trauma with Chinese Medicine and will discuss how to heal the nervous system and restore the body to balance after emotional trauma.
We will be closed April 13 through 21 to visit Mary Helen’s aunt Sarah in Tennessee. She turned 89 this year, and has been asking us to come for a visit.
If you haven’t already Like us on Facebook. Conan posts many of his health articles from the Epoch Times on our White Moon Facebook page. Here are some recent ones you might enjoy: http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/1276757-5-herbs-for-bone-health/
As always we’re available for free phone consults for all your health care needs. Have a great spring!
We wanted to let everyone know, the clinic will be closed this Saturday, Dec. 6. We will be at the Waldorf School Holiday Fair. http://chicagowaldorf.org/holiday-fair This is the holistic school that is directly south of our building, on Loyola, between Glenwood and Lakewood. The holiday fair is from 10 am to 4 pm. Admission is $5. They have a lot of artists and other holistic businesses that set up booths, mostly to sell items people would buy for holiday gifts. This is the first year we will have a table there. Waldorf is a very like-minded community. Stop by and say hi if you happen to be in the area.
We have made a lot of changes at White Moon Healing Center in the last few months. In order to make our services more accessible to more people, we have a new option for our first appointment. For acute situations—like a cold, UTI, allergies, or minor injury—the first session will only be for an hour.
For more chronic situations— such as diabetes, cancer, HIV/AIDS, anxiety disorder, chronic pain, or other more serious medical issues—two hours is necessary for the first time.
We encourage you to tell your family, friends, and co-workers about our services, especially if you know someone who has been interested in the past, but wasn’t ready to commit to the time and cost of a longer first session.
Most of you are familiar with White Moon Botanicals—our handmade line of concentrated herbal extracts. We have 77 formulas, and 150 individual herbs. We use the best quality organic and wild herbs from the Aryurvedic, Chinese, and Western traditions.
We recently changed the names of our formulas to reflect their action. For example, Milk Thistle Compound is now called Liver Detox. Pinellia Compound is now called Lung Decongestant.
We’ve also changed our prices. It’s been 10 years since our prices have been updated, and since we’ve switched to organic alcohol made from sugar cane, our costs have increased.
We are still able to keep our prices lower than similar formulas in the health food store, while our extracts our much more concentrated than most tinctures available commercially. The U.S. standards are 1 part herb to 5 parts water and alcohol, which is what most herb companies use. We use one part herb to one part water and alcohol, or sometimes an even more concentrated ratio. Our extracts are much stronger medicines at a lower price point. We have had so many clients over the years tell us how much more effective our formulas are than what they can get at the store. For the first time, we are listing our individual herbs in our pharmacy catalog. We have been getting more of a demand for herbs such as, ashwagandha, astragalus, eleuthro (Siberian ginseng), Gymnema, holy basil (Tulsi), lobelia, reishi, rhodiola, turmeric, and shitake. See our new pharmacy catalog here.
Our wide selection of herbs and formulas allows us to make custom remedies if needed.
As most of you know, we treat animals as well as people. Until recently, it has only been cats and dogs. We have had a lot of success with Delphi, an older female guinea pig. Delphi had lost a lot of weight and was down to a pound and a half. However, she had a tremendous appetite for food, and a tremendous thirst. She was drinking and peeing so much that her body had washed out too many minerals. Delphi had also recently had two weeks of antibiotic treatment from her vet for a urinary tract infection. She was getting worse, and the vet wasn’t able to determine what exactly was wrong, because it’s impossible to get a blood sample from a Guinea pig.
After doing Delphi’s medical history I came up with the same ideas the vet did: possible diabetes, hyperthyroid and adrenal/kidney disease. I was able to mix a dozen different herbal formulas together to cover all the bases. We used herbs for the bladder, adrenals, kidneys, pancreas, nervous, and immune systems, liver detox, and digestive tonics to help Delphi absorb food and minerals. We also added a hyperthyroid formula in powder form, and I suggested hemp seed oil and coconut water to replenish electrolytes.
Delphi is happier and friendlier than ever according to her owner. We have seen so many older animals respond rapidly to natural treatment, and bounce back to a full life again.
Five Formulas to Fortify Immunity
We hope that our new formula names will make people more familiar with what they’re taking. Here are some of our formulas you might consider for the cold season.
Immune Support (formerly Astragalus Compound)- A blend of herbs to keep the immune system strong. Great for people who are overstressed and overworked. Also helpful for those who have high exposure to infections such as teachers and health care workers. 4oz extract $47. Echinacea/Goldenseal-Bacterial/Viral Relief – Used during the acute stage of cold, flu or other bacterial or viral infection. When taken at initial onset, this formula acts as a natural antibiotic/antiviral and helps sweat out the infection before it really takes hold. 2 oz. extract $24.
Cold &Flu Tonic- This strong formula combines horseradish, garlic, ginger, onion, and habanero pepper with apple cider vinegar. Use as a natural antiviral, antibacterial. Can be taken to prevent or help treat infection. 4oz extract. $46.
Fungal-Viral Relief(formerly Lomatium Compound)- Used during acute and chronic viral & fungal infections. 4 oz. extract $44.
Lung Decongestion(formerly Pinellia Compound)- An expectorant that rids the lungs of phlegm, it is helpful in alleviating symptoms of bronchitis, pneumonia, asthma, coughs, colds and flu. 4 oz. extract $48.

White Moon Healing Center will be celebrating our 22nd anniversary on October 1st. We are also proud to celebrate the first annual Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine Day in Illinois on October 24. Governor Pat Quinn proclaimed the day to increase awareness of health care treatment options. More information on the festivities here. http://www.aomday.org/
Conan and Mary Helen attended a seminar this Summer Solstice (6/21/2014) on Integrating Herbs and Whole Food Nutrition with Lee Carroll, a clinical and research herbalist from Australia. We learned about the latest herbal research for treatment of osteoarthritis and its relationship to insulin resistance and high uric acid levels; balancing hormones for male and fertility, menopause and andropause; adrenal support and stress management; blood sugar imbalance and its relationship to dysbiosis, metabolic syndrome and diabetes; herbal antioxidants to reverse the aging process; and how to strengthen a weak immune system.
Mary Helen attended a seminar at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine this past Sunday (9/21/2014) by two internationally renowned Chinese medical doctors that specialize in liver disease: Dr. Haine Tian and Dr. Dan Wen. They covered dietary recommendations, herbal formulas, acupuncture treatments, and the latest herbal research on the following conditions:
Gallstone and biliary disorders, metabolic liver disease, fatty liver, hepatitis, ascites, jaundice, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and liver diseases induced by alcohol, drugs, toxic chemical exposure, and parasites.
Mary Helen was honored when Dr. Tian asked her to teach a segment of the class on her clinical results with liver/gallbladder flushes, since they had no experience with this method.
White Moon started carrying a new line of healing salves called Puremedy. They are a Canadian company using a 160 year old formula created by a native medicine man. The base of every formula is the Original Healing Salve which is excellent on its own for wound healing. The Black Salve is used for drawing out cancerous tumors. Other formulas are specialized for Eczema and Psoriasis, Cold Sores, Warts, Acne, Rosacea, Feminine Moisturizer, Sore Muscle and Joint Relief, Eucalyptus Chest Rub, and special salves for babies and pets.
The Original Healing Salve has been shown to kill infections including MRSA, staph, E. coli, candida, strep, and 99.99% of all pathogens.
As always, like us on Facebook to see our favorite health and wellness articles.
By the way, if you’ve considered making kombucha, or know someone who has, come and get a culture. We have an over-bountiful supply. They’re free.

Happy Spring 2014
We’ve all made it through the worst winter most of us have ever experienced, and it’s finally time to enjoy some nice weather again. We planted spring flowers in the front porch planters this past weekend, and there are bulbs coming up in the yard.
Spring is the traditional time for cleaning the house and detoxing the body. We encourage you to celebrate by eating or juicing a lot of spring greens. Our annual Detox Class http://whitemoonhealingcenter.com/annual-class.php#content is coming up on Sunday, April 27. If you are hoping to attend, please register ASAP due to limited seating. The class gets better every year. It incorporates information on many different topics, teaching you how to change your lifestyle so that you can be in charge of your own healthcare. Learn how to use natural medicine, so you no longer need to be dependent on over-the-counter or prescription drugs.
Conan has been promoted to the Health section at the Epoch Times http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/c/us/,where he has been a reporter and editor for almost 10 years. The Epoch Times Health section http://www.theepochtimes.com/n3/c/health/ is one of the best resources you’ll find anywhere on natural medicine. You can find Conan’s articles online at the Epoch Times website. This paper is published in 33 countries in 17 different languages. The paper is known for its coverage of human rights issues, and other important topics rarely seen in the mainstream media.
Many of Conan’s articles can be found on our Facebook page where we also post the latest developments in natural medicine, such as the recent article on Turmeric, http://csglobe.com/science-confirms-turmeric-as-effective-as-14-drugs/ which has been found to be just as effective as 14 pharmaceutical drugs. For instance, studies show that turmeric can be used to replace statins for high cholesterol, steroids for inflammation, blood thinners like aspirin, Prozac for depression, Metformin for regulating blood sugar, and even some chemotherapy drugs. This is very exciting research. Turmeric helps to detoxify the liver, which is why it is so effective in treating so many different issues. We make a concentrated liquid extract, and also carry some in pills. It’s great to add fresh turmeric roots to your vegetable juice. We also have a great recipe for pickling turmeric–it’s a delicious addition to salads.
If you haven’t already, be sure to “like” our Facebook https://www.facebook.com/whitemoonhealingcenter page so you can read the articles we post on a regular basis.
Hope you have a happy and healthy spring season. We encourage you to email or call us with any health concerns before going to the drug store or getting a prescription from your doctor. Always try the natural approach first.

Happy New Year 2014
We wanted to let everyone know that we have changed our first time medical history for new clients. Instead of spending 3 to 4 hours doing a comprehensive appointment, Mary Helen will now spend only 2 hours on the first visit. We have gotten feedback that some people didn’t want to spend such a long time and so much money on the first session. The amount of information can also be overwhelming for many.
We hope this will encourage more people to come in and get started on a natural health care path. If you have family, friends, or co-workers who have been interested in the past to come in but didn’t want to do such a long first visit, please let them know of this change. We want to make holistic health care as accessible to as many people as possible.
We are offering more of a modular list of services so we can add on an extra ½ hour or hour as needed when individuals need more time to focus on either diet/nutrition, herbal/supplements, or detox plans. This way we can spread out the information, time and money it takes to get a good program started.
We will be offering our annual Detox Class in April (date to be announced). This is a one day class on a Sunday … that gives an amazing amount of information on detoxing the body and replacing chemical medications with natural remedies. Students are given a large binder with all the information necessary to get started. Mary Helen teaches this with another acupuncturist. They both have over 20 years of clinical experience. Students really enjoy the class and are impressed by how much they learn, and remark how life changing the class is.
In 2013 Mary Helen renewed her CPR certification and took the class: “Nine Drugs to Worry About When Combined with Chinese Medicine” by Dr. Greg Sperber. This class discussed how certain Chinese herbs can interact with drugs such as herbal blood thinners and chemical blood thinners taken together. This is the third class Mary Helen has taken about drug and herb interaction to keep up with the latest research.
2014 is the Year of the Green Wooden Horse. Friday, January 31st marks the New Moon and the beginning of the Chinese Year of the Horse. Horse symbolizes travel, competition, victory, and quick success. The Horse year is usually a busy year in pursuit of goals, business, and social activities—both of friendship and romance. Horses have strong constitutions and this energy increases interest in physical exercise and health care.
As you start the New Year, let us help with your health care and detox needs. Check out our new list of services and see what would be a good fit for you or to recommend to someone you know.
Wishing you all a New Year of great health, happiness, peace, and prosperity!

Happy Thanksgiving 2013
It’s been a busy year at White Moon Healing Center, and we have a lot to be thankful for.
In September, the Illinois Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ILAAOM) celebrated its 30th anniversary. We attended ILAAOM’s annual fundraiser and Asian Moon Festival in Chinatown.
During her presentation, ILAAOM founding member Claudette Baker described how mainstream acupuncture had become. Acupuncture research by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), used to be filed under its Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) branch. Now acupuncture research is filed under the disease each study addresses—just like conventional research. This makes it easier to search for studies relative to an illness. For example, an acupuncture study on cancer treatment would now be found in the NIH Oncology Department.
We have been curious how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would affect our practice, and at the fundraiser we learned how ILAAOM is working to include acupuncture in the new legislation.
Section 2706 of the ACA empowers patients to obtain care from any licensed provider in a state for a specific benefit covered through an exchange health plan. This includes licensed naturopathic doctors, midwives, and massage therapists, as well as acupuncture and Oriental medicine practitioners. According to a board member we talked to, we need to lobby Illinois insurance carriers to cover acupuncture. Be sure to talk to your insurance rep about adding acupuncture coverage to your policy and when looking for a new policy, ask specifically for one that covers acupuncture.
Ever wonder if your family and friends should consider acupuncture? http://www.alternativemedicine.com/health/should-i-consider-acupuncture We thought this article answered the question very well. Pass it on to people in your life who you know could benefit from Oriental medicine, but who are unaware of how effective it can be.
We’re all about empowering our patients with information, and Conan has taken this mission to his second job with the Epoch Times. Since 2005, he has been a reporter and editor with the Epoch Times—a paper published in 21 languages, and 35 countries, and best known for exposing the human rights abuses in China. Conan currently writes about food and drug policy and we post many of his articles to our Facebook page. Here are some recent pieces you might enjoy.

We have added several new products to our pharmacy:
Zyflammend— The #1 selling herbal product in the U.S., Zyflamend is clinically tested to reduce inflammation, and treat pain. It includes ginger, turmeric, rosemary, and other herbs, and can be used in place of Advil, Tylenol, or aspirin.
Turmeric and Bromelain—Another safe and effective pain formula. Several studies reveal turmeric’s anti-inflammatory effects to be comparable to hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone, but unlike the drugs, which are associated with significant toxic effects, turmeric produces no toxicity. Bromelain—an anti-inflammatory, antihistamine enzyme derived from pineapple—has been shown to reinforce normal immune system response.
Gymnema tincture—In ancient times, Gymnema came to be known as “destroyer of sugar” because Ayurvedic physicians observed that chewing a few leaves suppressed the taste of sugar. Clinical trials have shown that this herb is useful in both insulin-dependent and certain types of non-insulin-dependent diabetes. We’ve carried Gymnema in tablets for years, but the tincture has an extra advantage–a half dropperful applied to the tongue safely neutralizes the sweet taste for over an hour. A handy remedy for battling the holiday sweet tooth.
Kniepp Baths—New scents include Sensual Seduction (night blooming jasmine), Pure Bliss (red poppy and hemp), Enjoy Life (May Chang and lemon). Although it’s been unavailable most of this year, the Spruce &Pine is back! Can’t decide on just one scent? Try a variety pack. It makes a great gift.
We have been treating more cats and dogs with so much success. If your pets need health care, consider using natural remedies before chemical medications from the vet. Most pets can be treated just by changing their diet and adding supplements to their food. We can easily treat pets through phone consults. We only have animals come into the clinic for acupuncture which isn’t needed in most cases.
We are also doing more phone consults for people who live far away or anyone who wants nutritional/herbal/detox treatment without acupuncture. We mail herbs out weekly (either Monday or Tuesday), so be sure to place your orders by Monday morning.
As always we are happy to give free phone and email consults for all your health issues. We want to be your primary care and help you use natural medicine first. Please refer your family, friends, and co-workers. We will also offer them a free consult and let them know our services can help them heal.
20th Anniversary Newsletter
Dear Clients and Friends
White Moon Healing Center is proudly celebrating its 20 year anniversary!
We opened on October 1st 1992, and we want to thank all of our clients for your continued support by offering a 20% discount off your first acupuncture treatment in October—a $15 savings.
Over the past two decades, we have treated well over a thousand people and pets, helped multiple members of the same families, and watched kids grow up. We’ve seen couples with infertility issues conceive healthy babies, and witnessed many older pets regain a high quality of life after the vet was ready to euthanize, determining that there were no other options except to “maybe try acupuncture.”
It has been such an amazing experience to see the miracles of natural medicine. Most of our clients have been complex cases who were previously on several pharmaceuticals. We’ve seen scores ofpeople that had been to all thetop Western and natural medical specialists—even the Mayo Clinic—but still weren’t able to get the help they needed. We have treatedpeople with cancer, heart disease, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, autoimmune disease, mental illness, and every other stubborn health issue imaginable. And we have seen them return to a healthy life, and feeling better than they ever have before because we taught them how to help themselves!
White Moon offers several unique services. Mary Helen spends more time than any other holistic practitioner during the first-time medical history. She spends anywhere from 2 to 4 hours—sometimes even more with very complex cases. This allows for a more complete picture of your health—not only evaluating diet and herbs, but examining your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. With this information, Mary Helen plans a customized detox/nutritional/herbal & supplement program tailored for each individual.
We feel it’s important to take the time to educate people on how to heal themselves through lifestyle, diet changes, and nature’s pharmacy. We make the strongest herbal extracts around, and can custom make formulas from over 150 organic and wildcrafted Chinese and Western herbs. Plus, we always offer free phone and email consults for all of your health questions.
We have detoxed clients off thousands of toxic chemical “medications” (narcotic pain killers, steroids, antidepressants, anti-anxiety, high cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes meds, asthma inhalers, anti-histamines, synthetic hormones, etc.) and replaced them with natural remedies. We’ve learned that there are always plant-based medicines that can do the job better by really healing the body and not just masking the symptoms.
For those of you who would like to know more, we will be offering our 5th annual Detox Class on Sunday, October 21. This is a one day opportunity to learn how to heal all chronic disease. If you know someone who is suffering and needs to turn their life around, this is the chance for them to start down a path to optimal health! (Flyer attached)
We were honored to have the clinic featured in the Newleaf Health Food store’s August 2012 newsletter written by the owner, Karen:
“Actually, my favorite place is the holistic clinic and natural pharmacy called White Moon Healing Center just a short block from Newleaf on Albion Ave. White Moon is run by Mary Helen Lee, acupuncturist and trained healer, and her partner Conan Milner, master herbalist and clinic manager. I have been seeing this amazing power couple for some time now. After every treatment I feel like my stress has been completely washed away, and the amazing herbal elixirs they make have kept me balanced and moving forward even when the road has seemed rocky and the way uncertain. I doubt there is anyone out there with the responsibilities of life (spouse, children, parents, job, school, business, etc.) that cannot relate to this, or benefit from one of their healing treatments.”
The clinic will be closed while we will be attending a seminar next Saturday, October 6 with internationally-renowned Australian herbalist, author, research chemist, and teacher Kerry Bone. He will be presenting cutting edge information from around the world on treating the immune system, allergies and autoimmune diseases, detoxing heavy metals, and the latest information on herbal antioxidants, and herbal antibiotics. We are excited for the opportunity to study with him again.
If you haven’t done so already, please be sure to “like” us on Facebook where we feature important news articles about health and natural medicine.
Please come in, call or email and celebrate our anniversary with us. We’d love to see you.
Happy Fall Equinox,
Mary Helen and Conan
Dear Clients and Friends,
How time flies. We just realized it’s been two years since our last newsletter! White Moon Healing Center has been busy in many ways—in the clinic, online, and in the classroom.
Our website, www.whitemoonhealingcenter.com , keeps expanding. We have added several new pages, including a list of conditions the World Health Organization has determined acupuncture can successfully treat: http://whitemoonhealingcenter.com/who.php. While it’s a conservative assessment, you may still be surprised to learn just how many issues acupuncture is good for.
Our blog has been moved to our Facebook page where we regularly post articles related to natural health. Please “like” our page, and see regular updates.
While you’re at it, you can check out our Yelp page. For those of you that are Yelp users, we encourage your reviews. For some reason, all or most of our reviews have been filtered, but they’re still available to read at a link at the bottom of our page. As always, we welcome testimonials for our website as well.
We have more of an online presence, but our focus is still natural healing, and we have been taking a lot of continuing education seminars to improve our skills, learn new techniques, and better serve you. Here are some of the classes Mary Helen and Conan taken recently:
Keys to Healthy Aging—World famous Australian herbalist Kerry Bone RH(AHG)is also an experienced researcher and industrial chemist. In the class, he covered many Western herbs in depth, exploring detoxification, as well as treatments for cardiovascular disorders, metabolic syndromes, cancer, periodontal disease, osteoarthritis, cognitive function, osteopenia, osteoporosis, stress, and more.
Restorative Endocrinology: Balancing Hormones in Menopause—Hair and saliva tell more about the internal body than you might imagine. Dr. Annette Kutz Schippel uses saliva testing to view adrenal and ovary health, as well as bone density, and uses hair analysis to check for mineral imbalances that reveal endocrine disorders. In her class, she explained bio-identical hormones, and herbal hormone therapy, compared to chemical hormone replacement.
The class covered prevention and treatment of hysterectomy, osteoporosis, excess uterine bleeding, hot flashes and night sweats, vaginal dryness and dysplasia, urinary problems, insomnia, ovarian cancer, loss of libido, weight gain, migraine headaches, fatigue, depression, mood swings, thyroid imbalance, acid reflux, ulcers, gallbladder dysfunction, and leaky gut.
Using Essential Oils in Chinese Medicine—Peter Holmes L.Ac., M.H. is a world famous herbalist and we were thrilled to have the chance to study with him. He’s known for his ground breaking book, “The Energetics of Western Herbs” which classifies Western herbs with Chinese medicine theory. Holmes is a prolific author who has also written a Chinese Herbal Materia Medica, and is currently working on a volume devoted to the therapeutic use of essential oils. He founded his own essential oil company, Snow Lotus, with high quality organic oils from all over the world. We have added many of his oils to our pharmacy. They are amazing medicines for both acute and chronic issues, whether they be physical, emotional, or mental imbalances. Check out our new Essential Oil Catalog:….
Classic Formulas: Pathophysiology of Selected Formulas with Case Studies—This was taught by a fellow acupuncturist and herbalist, Sharon Weizenbaum. She covered a lot of the classic Chinese herbal formulas that have been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Sometimes the classic indications for these formulas are not for diseases seen often in our modern culture. These are formulas practitioners need to memorize for their board exams, but don’t often use in clinical practice. She showed us through complex and stubborn case studies how Master Chinese doctors looked back to the classics to cure many modern conditions that even their colleagues couldn’t successfully treat—insomnia, anxiety, bipolar disorder, hypertension, diabetes, chronic pain issues , such as joint and muscle pain, menstrual cramps and migraines; and digestive issues, such as GERD, IBS, gastritis, ulcers, hepatitis, Crohn’s disease, esophageal spasm, and chronic diarrhea. There were also treatments for edema, nosebleeds, excess uterine bleeding, gout, morning sickness, agoraphobia, pneumonia, vertigo, epilepsy, parasites, and cardiac issues, such as heart palpitations, coronary, rheumatic, and pulmonary heart disease, atrial fibrillation, and bradycardia .
Magnesium and Mineral Balance: Riding the Wave of Stress—Morley Robbins spent over 30 years as a hospital executive, and has now become a natural health crusader, teaching about health through nutrition and mineral balance. Morley’s focus is magnesium deficiency, which he has found through years of research to be the root of many modern diseases.
Magnesium is responsible for over 300 enzymatic processes in the body. It acts as a muscle relaxer, anti-inflammatory, and a sedative. Magnesium has been shown to treat many chronic health issues, like estrogen related cancers (such as colon, prostate, and breast cancer), it helps prevent and reverse osteoporosis, high blood pressure, insomnia, depression, anxiety, low libido, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, heart attack, stroke, constipation, headaches, infertility, menstrual and leg cramps, neuropathy, PMS, psoriasis, and vitamin D deficiency.
Mary Helen attended Integrative Endocrinology for Acupuncturists—taught by Dr. David Miller, who is a pediatrician, and a board certified acupuncturist. This class integrated biomedical understanding of the endocrine system, embryology, and evolution theory with the body’s electromagnetic field described in Chinese medical theory as acupuncture meridians.
Acupuncture can directly effect and help balance the function of all of our endocrine glands—thyroid, ovaries, testicles, pancreas, adrenals, pituitary, thymus, and hypothalamus. The class discussed how the ancient Chinese concept of the organ systems also relates to the endocrine glands. For example, the spleen in Chinese medicine relates to the function of the pancreas.
Mary Helen will teach her 5th annual Detox Class on Sunday, October 21. This class is a great opportunity for anyone who suffers from or treats chronic health issues. In one day you’ll learn the basics for getting back on the path to health! Happy Summer Solstice!
We have some great news to share with everyone!
Mary Helen had a paper published in the current issue of the Oriental Medicine Journal titled “Detoxifying the Body: Integrating Naturopathic Remedies into the TCM Practice.” The article is a summary of the annual Detox Class we offer each spring to acupuncturists, health professionals and the general public. It contains a lot of useful self-care information everyone can practice to prevent and heal chronic health issues. Please share this with your family, friends, co-workers, and everyone you know who maybe open to it. http://whitemoonhealingcenter.com/detoxarticle.php
We also want to share several recent and very positive changes for the acupuncture community!
In our Spring newsletter, we sent out information regarding the Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act—HR 646. This bill mandates that acupuncture will be provided for all recipients of Medicare, Medicaid, and all Federal employees. History shows that when these institutions cover a service that all major insurance plans follow suit. This is the first step for acupuncture coverage by all insurance companies, and would lead to having acupuncture included into the future National Health Care Plan.
The legislation is closer than ever as there are now only 6 states without an acupuncture practice act (Alabama, Kansas, Mississippi, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Wyoming). The national acupuncture organizations are pushing hard to help these states put an Acupuncture Practice Act in place. Once all 50 states are on board, the committee will put the bill up for vote.
We’ve been waiting for this for many years, and it looks as though there is a good chance that it will pass as both parties have responded favorably to the bill.
Another important piece of legislation related to greater accessibility of alternative medicine can be found in the new National Health Care Act.
(To read more go to“AAAOM Lauds New Health Care Bill” at acupuncturetoday.com): http://www.acupuncturetoday.com/mpacms/at/article.php?id=32207
This non-discrimination law would allow anyone with health insurance to access any licensed health care provider and receive coverage. This means that patients can choose to receive their health care from not only acupuncturists, but also massage therapists, nutritionists, dentists, optometrists, nurse midwives, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, psychologists, etc.
In other words, if the health care practitioner is licensed for it, the law states that it must be covered.
It also states that you can see any licensed practitioner you wish—no more groups where you are restricted to a handful of practitioners within your plan.
This non-discrimination law goes into effect in 2014, but the American Medical Association (AMA) and the pharmaceutical industry is already mounting a massive lobbying effort to oppose this aspect of the bill so that they can maintain their monopoly on health care.
Therefore, we must start contacting our elected officials and let them know that we support the non-discrimination law, and we don’t want the AMA to alter it. It’s about time we have equal access to the choice of healthcare we receive!
Meanwhile, the Department of Labor is finally reclassifying the status of acupuncture from a “modality” to the more appropriate “profession.” We are currently in the requisite, transitional year of being an “emerging profession.” This terminology is important because once it becomes official this may affect the laws governing who may practice acupuncture.
Currently, there are many medical doctors, chiropractors, and osteopaths who practice acupuncture with little or no training. While there are some states where chiropractors are not allowed to practice acupuncture without board certification, these are in the minority. For example, most board certified acupuncturists have a minimum of 3000 hours of training, while most doctors, chiropractors, and osteopaths have a maximum of 200 hours of training in acupuncture—although legally they are not required to have any training at all!.
This change may require a more complete training before non-acupuncturists can legally practice acupuncture. Just as in any other area of medicine, one should be board certified, and meet state licensing requirements to be able to practice in that field or specialty of medicine. This is the only way to ensure patients are getting treated by properly trained practitioners.
We are excited and inspired by this news, and will keep everyone updated on the progress of these changes.
As always, we are happy to offer free phone and e-mail consultations for all of your healthcare needs. We can e-mail updated copies of our pharmacy catalog, restaurant list, nutritional handouts, or any other informational materials we have available at your request.
We mail herbs out from the pharmacy every week, for those who want to place orders but can’t make it by the clinic. We hope you enjoy the Detox Article and incorporate some or all of these ideas into your life. Feel free to give us your feedback, comments, or questions.
Have a Happy and Healthy Summer,
Mary Helen and Conan
Happy Spring Equinox and Happy New Year!
Spring begins today, Saturday, March 20th at 12:33pm!
2010 is the Chinese Year of the Tiger. The Lunar New Year always begins on the new moon—this year it began on 02/14/2010, Valentines Day! The tiger symbolizes a dynamic force of nature that brings massive change. The stripes of the tiger represent the balance of yin and yang. Tigers are respected as magical guardians of the home, they protect against fire, thieves and ghosts. Negative aspects of the tiger include selfishness, egotism, arrogance, aggressiveness and unpredictability. Tiger’s can make impulsive decisions that prove to be unwise in the long run. Positive aspects of the tiger include ambition, charisma, courage, dependability and loyalty. Tiger’s are full of stamina, they love fun and adventure. They seek out new life experiences and social gatherings. Tigers are also tender and loving toward their family and children.
Please contact your Congressional Representative and ask them to cosponsor HR646. The Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act. To learn more and obtain a sample letter go to http://www.rallycongress.com/aaaom/1944. Bills are introduced for a two year period and we are entering the second year for HR646 so time is of the essence. This bill has been stuck in committee for many years previous. To find your congressperson go to http://www.house.gov/zip/ZIP2Rep.html and type in your zipcode. Of the 19 districts in Illinois only Jan Schakowsky and Jesse Jackson are co-sponsors of this bill. Please thank them for their support. Bobby Rush and John Shimkus sit on the Energy and Commerce Committee to which HR646 has been referred—we really need their sponsorship.

This is a great opportunity for anyone with chronic health issues. In one day they can learn almost everything they need to know for self healing. This class can literally be life changing—detoxing the body reverses the aging process and the symptoms of all chronic illnesses. Detoxing techniques can be utilized by anyone to bring the body to optimal health. Mary Helen will be publishing a paper entitled “Detoxifying the Body: Integrating Naturopathic Remedies into the TCM Practice,” based on this class. It can be found in the spring issue of the Oriental Medicine Journal.
Mary Helen and Conan have recently attended the following continuing education classes: “Regulating the Thyroid, Adrenals and Blood Sugar Through Restorative Endocrinology,” taught by renown practitioner Dr. Janet Lang. This class covered the brain-hypothalamus-pituitary axis, saliva tests for adrenal hormones, hypoglycemia, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, tests for glucose and hemoglobin A1c, hypothyroid, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, hyperthyroid, vitamin D levels, hair analysis for heavy metal toxicity and mineral imbalance to check for endocrine disorders, gallbladder problems, leaky gut, acid reflux, Celiac disease, H. Pylori, EFA’s and microwave hazards.
We also attended a second seminar by Dr. Lang on “Balancing Hormones in Cycling Women Through Restorative Endocrinology.” This class covered topics such as pituitary, adrenal, and ovarian hormones; perimenopause and menopause; blood tests vs. saliva tests; hair analysis; synthetic hormones vs. transdermal hormone creams vs. bio-identical hormones; endometriosis; functional ovarian cysts; polycystic ovarian syndrome; uterine fibroids; migraines; PMS; adrenal fatigue; infertility; estrogen dominance; iodine loading; and copper toxicity.
Paul Pitchford, the author of “Healing with Whole Foods” taught a class based on his well known text book. We were both very excited to see him after recommending his book to our clients for many years. His approach to nutritional healing combines the time-honored guidelines of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with the latest nutritional research. He focuses on a plant based diet, detoxification and proper food combining. He covered treatment of children, the elderly, autoimmune disease, infectious disease, gluten intolerance, heavy metal toxicity, chemo and radiation, addictions, Lyme disease and parasites.
Mary Helen attended the seminar “Red Flags in Common Conditions” with Dr. Michelle Sergel, an E.R. doctor at Cook County Hospital. This covered common symptoms that could possibly indicate emergency situations such as headaches, abdominal pain, back pain, cough, upper and lower extremity pain, fatigue, colds & flu, dizziness, diabetes and hypertension. The second half of this class was “Red Flags in Pregnancy” taught by registered nurse, acupuncturist and midwife Judy Schlaeger. Conditions covered were hemorrhage; miscarriage; incomplete abortion; urine, blood and ultrasound tests for complications; ectopic pregnancy; hydatidiform molar pregnancy; cervical insufficiency; placenta previa; placental abruption; preterm labor; hyperenesis graviderum; hypertension and preeclampsia.
Giovanni Maciocia taught “The Psyche in Chinese Medicine.” He presented a fascinating overview of the Chinese concepts, diagnosis and treatment of mental illness and psychological imbalances, exploring how these imbalances correspond to changes in the physical body. This class covered the mind, soul, spirit and emotions associated with each organ system. Sleep disorders, mania, depression, anxiety, anger, sadness, grief, worry, fear, shock, shame, guilt, envy, despair and pensiveness were some of the major emotions studied. Mary Helen also took Maciocia’s “Tongue Diagnosis” class. Maciocia wrote the most widely used textbook on tongue diagnosis, full of great color pictures and pathologies. Chinese medicine observes the color, shape, coating, moisture, cracks, swelling, peeling and topography of the tongue to see what’s happening in the organ systems and internal environment of the body.
Mary Helen attended “Infertility and TCM: Clinical Pearls from Nanjing—IVF and TCM, PCOS, Ovarian Failure and Autoimmune Infertility.” This was taught by Richard Blitstein, Lic., Ac., after his recent trip to China learning the cutting edge techniques for infertility treatment. Richard presented his research on the latest advances from around the world in both Western and TCM treatment for IUI (inter-uterine insemination), IVF (in-vitro fertilization), the basics of ART (assisted reproductive technology), blocked fallopian tubes, POF (premature ovarian failure), PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), OVAB (ovarian antibodies) and autoimmune infertility. This class reviewed all of the medications, procedures and side-effects reproductive endocrinologists and TCM practitioners encounter in the current treatment of infertility.
Mary Helen also attended “TCM and Lab Interpretation” taught by Dr. Kenneth Park., MD, Lic., Ac. This class reviewed blood chemistry and urinalysis. Panels covered included basic and comprehensive metabolic, electrolytes, renal function, hepatic function and lipids. When values were out of normal range all possible symptoms and diseases were explained.
